Songbird edition by Iris Bolling Piper Huguley Deborah FletcherMello Literature Fiction eBooks

What an incredible anthology by three of my favorite authors. This book had three amazing, cross-generational stories that flowed seamlessly between the three, and showed the common singing talent and divergent paths to utilize it.

The first story, Sparrow's Song by Piper Huguley, deals with Sparrow Jones. A recent high school graduate, Sparrow has two dreams: one is to sing the National Anthem for President John F. Kennedy. But after his and his brother Robert Kennedy's assassinations, Sparrow's focus is on her second dream, which is to attend music school. To earn the tuition, her plan is to run the church's summer program. But life once again intrudes and Sparrow's dream is seemingly dashed. But when an eight year old girl and her military father cross Sparrow's path, her dream will either be deferred, dashed, or detoured. Excellent story.

The second story, Lark's Lyrics by Deborah Fletcher Mello, is about Sparrow's daughter, Lark St. Clair Warren, and it beautifully and poignantly begins where the first story ended. Lark is also a gifted singer, but her dreams and talent take her further from her gospel roots and into the world of nightclub singing, where she becomes a successful headliner. But again, life has a way of intruding on dreams, yet offering another path. Loved the way the majority of this story was via Lark's flashback that she told to her daughter.

The final story, Dove's Dream by Iris Bolling, is about Dove Warren, who is Lark's daughter, and is the most talented singer of the three generations of songbirds. Her talent takes her further and she achieves more acclaim than either her mother or grandmother, But with fame comes problems, and with Dove's problems, comes 'the one'. Dove is able to achieve not only her dreams, but finally the fulfillment of the dream that began with her grandmother. As much as I enjoyed this story, it had numerous editing errors and presented many challenges to my reading flow.

This anthology is an amazing read, and one that will probably be a favorite of individuals and book clubs.

Songbird edition by Iris Bolling Piper Huguley Deborah FletcherMello Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

OMG...This was such an awesome book. Piper, Deborah, and Iris made the St Clair Belles aka Songbirds come to life. I’m wanting more as the story ended but enjoyed the beautiful love stories and the love of music that connected them all.
Can I have a sequel please? Awesome ladies, just awesome!
Wow it's hard to pinpoint one area. The way each author told their story was fantastic. The characters were so real and I believe most people could pick out a family member and say " yeah that's what my .....would say". I am very familiar with Iris Bollinger and Debra Fletcher Mellon, but this was my first read of Piper Huguley and I truly enjoyed it. You will not be disappointed.
This is a book about one family all named after birds, but they all have the same gift of singing. We start the book with sparrow, the matriarch then lark, her daughter and lastly the granddaughter Dove. The book begins with sparrow on hear deathbed and all the grls gathered at her bedside. We then begin to learn about sparrow life. It continues with lark and then dove. Each author told the story in such a way that you didn't know the authors had changed. It flowed seamlessly. This book is definitely worth a second read.
What an amazing book written by three incredible authors! The flow and the marrying of the stories was sooooo awesome! What a wonderful r way to display love, family, life struggles, politics and racial climate and display it in such a way that keeps u entertained and flipping the pages!!! Wow and it's written by three different people coming from thee different angles making one cohesive body of work.... Amazing just amazing!!
I loved Songbird. Unlike many anthologies, the authors knit together a complex family along with the romance in a way that was almost seamless. The mother/daughter/sister relationships were as intense as the romances. My favorite entry was Piper Huguley's 1960s opener. It was emotional, set in an era when times were changing. Its sweet romance involves a military man and his daughter as well as a young woman trying to decide what to do with her life and talent. Civil rights and Vietnam's shadows play a role in the plot, motivating the characters. Deborah Mello and Iris Boling follow along in their own styles but keep the history of the family ties intact while moving the stories forward by the decades. Not always easy to do with multiple authors. If you enjoy multigenerational, music oriented stories and a collection of different writing styles, this is a fabulous collection to pick up.
Bravo...Great Job! I enjoyed Songbird, a beautiful anthology of 3 different gifted and talented women with the gift of being able to sing. Each building from the strength of the matriarch Sparrow, who passed her gift down to Lark, who's daughter Dove, received the blessed gift from both her grandmother and mother. The power of love, family, and music is expressed throughout the pages. This page turner will keep you wanting more so much that you will want to read it all in one day. The authors did a phenomenal job linking all three stories together to create one great story. You truly get a three in one that is seamless. The three authors did an outstanding job bringing Songbird to life.
This is one of he best anthologies I've ever read. These 3 awesome authors put together a great book. You have a songbird in each generation and each author tells their love story.
At times, this book will make you cry, smile and laugh out loud. I hope to read more collaborations from These three!
